Calling all jaded intellectuals/hipsters/parents/world citizens - -

I think we might have something in common.

I have spent countless nights engaging in rich, well-spoken conversation with my friends about environmental, political, and social issues, maybe like you. Despite my well-versed knowledge and trivial archive of irksome news knowledge, however, I haven't spent much time actually doing something about them. And, I think this activism apathy effects a lot of people. Most of the people I know, including myself, care a lot about controversial or immediate issues and are smart enough to do something about them. But when it comes down to it, "activism" just isn't that appealing on our days off. Perhaps it's because when we think of taking action we picture suffrage parades and 60s sit-ins, all incredibly laudable and deserving of your attention, but all time-consuming and ill-fitting in our Starbucks-laden modern lives, as well. Thus, we are turned off to the idea of "taking action", see it as an all-or-nothing situation, and ultimately choose nothing.

So, I'm abandoning the idea of activism as a giant commitment of time and energy. Considering issues that I care about and incorporating a change into my daily life, as simple as it may be, is nothing short of a success. Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world." The only thing activism requires of me is an acknowledgement of an issue I feel strongly about and an active response to support the cause.

I created this blog to share my experience on the "road o' activism" through videos, pictures, sound, and text. Hopefully it will be interesting enough to inspire others to follow along and 'do more than just talk about it', as well.

Enjoy.

What i figured out by doing my recent art series, is that "activist apathy" isn't our fault. We aren't bad people. We are just fed a healthy diet of lame distractions. Not only that but it is hard to find the true, unmediated truth.

It takes a degree of manic curiosity to find out what's really going on. Maybe we shouldnt try to get a handle on EVERY concern, maybe if we each make one smaller concern our priority things will work out : )
